What to expect from a home energy assessment
An energy specialist will identify energy-saving opportunities throughout your home and make recommendations. You may qualify for rebates and incentives such as:
- 75–100% off approved insulation improvements
- No-cost targeted air sealing
- Rebates on qualifying energy-efficient heating, cooling, and/or water-heating equipment (eligibility based on findings from your Home Energy Assessment)
- The opportunity to apply for 0% financing through the Mass Save HEAT Loan Program for eligible upgrades
What makes the program “no-cost”
As a National Grid customer, you have already been paying into this program through your utility bill, so it’s worthwhile to take advantage of it. Thanks to the Green Communities Act of 2008, Massachusetts utilities and energy-efficiency service-providers that sponsor Mass Save are required by the state to provide energy-efficiency programs.
Assessments can be done more than once
If you have not had your home assessed in the last two years, you can have it done again. It may be time to improve your insulation, or check out technologies like smart thermostats, and the incentives for retrofits may have changed as well.
Benefits of a no-cost energy assessment
One of the first steps toward better efficiency is weatherization, which includes upgrading your insulation and air sealing. Through the program, income-qualified homes may receive no-cost weatherization improvements. Benefits include:
- Lowering heating and cooling costs by up to 20%
- Decreasing drafts to improve comfort and humidity all year long
- Minimizing outside noise for a quieter, more peaceful environment
- Preventing allergens and pests from entering your home
- Reducing the chance of ice dams—protecting your home from potential damage
Types of energy-saving products available
Your energy specialist might recommend a variety of free products that would be delivered to your door for you to install, such as:
- Advanced power strips
- Low-flow showerheads
- Faucet aerators
- Efficient thermostats
- Limited-time offer for 100% off approved insulation improvements
- No-cost targeted air-sealing
- Generous rebates on qualifying energy-efficient heating, cooling, and water-heating equipment
- The opportunity to apply for 0% HEAT Loan financing for eligible upgrades.

How to get a virtual assessment
Mass Save allows you to conduct an initial Online Home Energy Assessment, in which you will enter basic details about your home. This process will help you determine if you would benefit from an in-person home energy assessment.
